Google Issues Clarion Call for Project Ara Devs
Google is ramping up its plans to bring the Project Ara modular smartphone to market by scheduling the first developer conference for the device.
The company will hold the conference on April 15-16 at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif. A limited number of developers will be able to attend the conference in person, but anyone can participate online through a live stream and interactive Q&A.
Project Ara's aim is to allow consumers to fully customize their smartphones by swapping interchangeable components in and out. The device has a core frame, called an "endoskeleton," that holds the other components together.

project ara modules

Users can change the modules depending on their needs and preferences: They might wish to have an extra battery in place of a camera, for example, or to exchange a large touchscreen for one with a physical keyboard.

Module Developers' Kit

The April event is the first of three Ara developer conferences Google plans to hold throughout the year. It will focus on the alpha release of the Ara module developers' kit, or MDK, which will provide developers with everything they need to create a module for the device, according to Google.
The open platform specification and reference implementation is likely to be released in early April, which is later than the previously announced winter window.
The conference will walk developers through current and planned features of the platform, including briefings and feedback sessions on the MDK, and unveil prize challenges. Google will reveal the full conference schedule in the next few weeks.
The Ara project accelerated after a Dutch design student revealed his idea for a similar initiative last year. Google has teamed up with Dave Hakkens, the creator of the Phonebloks concept, to cultivate his community of more than 950,000 supporters.

Vast Potential

"The potential for Project Ara is vast, at least if you consider the idea of easily customizable commercial smartphones important," said Charles King, principal analyst at Pund-IT.
"Personally, I love the idea of choosing phone features as easily as you would configure a Dell PC. Like other Google moon shot projects, [its success] depends on enticing and exciting developers. They'll be doing a lot of the Project Ara heavy lifting," he told TechNewsWorld.
"Does Google have everything it takes to lead in this [smartphone-driven] world? No, no one does," telecommunications analyst Jeff Kagan told TechNewsWorld. "However, Google wants to attract all the ideas and people that will be involved with this new world. That's the entire point of Project Ara."
Google wants to attract "app developers large and small -- and new and old companies with ideas who want to change the industry," Kagan suggested.

Early Advocates

"This is a really interesting project but very different, and folks likely want to see if there are opportunities with the initiative," Rob Enderle, principal analyst at the Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld.
By inviting developers to a conference at this stage, Google will "get early advocates and likely get some ideas they hadn't thought of," he noted.
"I have to say that this is really a moon shot project," Jim McGregor, principal analyst at Tirias Research, told TechNewsWorld.
"I don't see how this is going to get off the ground. How do you test and certify each potential phone configuration?" he wondered.
"How are these going to be less expensive than the solutions from [original equipment manufacturers] that have volume component-buying capabilities and mass production efficiencies? How are these piecemeal phones going to be competitive on features and functions? And how are you going to ensure that applications and user interfaces operate properly?" asked McGregor.
"From my standpoint, I am interested in this project because it offers me a cellular platform that I might be able to use in a different form factor and manner, such as [Internet of Things] applications," he continued. "However, I don't see the value in recreating the wheel."

Risk Factor

Whether Ara will prove a success remains to be seen, but Google is unlikely to be risking much with the endeavor.
"At this point, I don't see a lot of risk for Google," Pund-IT's King suggested.
"The company is leveraging already-existing assets, and I doubt it's made significant additional investments. If Project Ara lifts off, it could be a win-win for all involved," he said.
"The risk is small and will mostly be taken by those that actually build hardware," said Enderle. "It is an interesting idea, but one I think Apple would have been better at, because they'd focus more on the user experience. Google will likely focus more on doing everything they can -- and create a bit of a mess at first."

How Facebook Got Snookered in WhatsApp Deal
It's not often I see news that surprises me, but Facebook paying nearly US$20 billion for an instant messaging app had me scratching my head. People have been paying too much for properties for some time, but this is crazy money for a class of product that stopped being trendy nearly a decade ago.
I've come up with three reasons, none of which are mutually exclusive, as to how Facebook was tricked into massively -- boy, that word is just not adequate to describe this -- overpaying for this property. This should be a wakeup call for Yahoo, Microsoft and Aol, and it will be interesting to see how Google responds.
I'll close with my product of the week: a cool touchscreen monitor from Dell for us Windows 8 users.

Consider the Metrics

Facebook is a social network and it came to market long after instant messaging products had mostly gone the way of the dinosaur. They failed largely because their owners couldn't agree to let them communicate with each other. Imagine having email systems that only worked inside their own ecosystem -- which is kind of what we had before the Internet, with things like IBM Profs. The folks at Facebook forgot that IM was largely obsolete and measured it on engagement.
Engagement requires that people respond to each other. It's optional in a social network, but with a communications system like phone, email or IM, engagement is the whole point. Folks specifically use the system to communicate -- that is what it is for. So we don't measure it on engagement, because that would be silly -- like measuring a window on resolution because we grew up with TVs and no windows. A window would trump Ultra HD, but the measurement would be silly.
So not remembering IM -- living under the belief that engagement was incredibly important -- Facebook saw WhatsApp not as an IM platform, but as an incredibly successful social network with near unlimited value.
You know, if Facebook really wants engagement, it might want to think of buyingFreedomPop. It goes far farther than WhatsApp and it could accommodate the entire Facebook mobile experience.
Freedom Phone uses VoIP cellphones and charges a fraction of what a typical cellphone carrier charges. Users could also have put WhatsApp on the phones, and Facebook probably could have bought it for closer to Instagram's price. Just saying...

The Carriers' Role

Unlike a property like Instagram or YouTube -- where the value is in the product and the service is delivered over the Internet -- WhatsApp has as a core value the ability to go around SMS. It is kind of like VoIP (like Skype) but just for messaging. It is incredibly popular in Europe because there are high charges for cross-border SMS.
It saves you money by going around the expensive carrier services built into phone plans. However, these charges are in the process of being eliminated for messages that originate and terminate in Europe, as part of a process to eliminate roaming charges in the EU.
In addition, the service likely was successful because it operated under the radar. The carriers didn't know how much money they were losing to WhatsApp and so didn't move to block it or make it more expensive to use (which is what they did with VoIP when they stopped offering unlimited data plans).
Thus the value of the offering is in the hands of carriers that either will eliminate that value through targeted action or have much of it removed by government action, at least in Europe.

Bidding Games

We've now seen inflated acquisition prices a number of times: Microsoft with Skype, and HP with Autonomy come to mind as the two largest before WhatsApp. A company is led to believe it is bidding against someone else and ends up bidding against itself. In HP's case it was Oracle, and in Microsoft's case, it was Google
A company justifies paying an incredible price because it feels there must be value there if the competition is bidding so aggressively, and it doesn't want to lose. Once the other company in the supposed bidding war is disclosed, it typically points out that it either had not been bidding at all or stopped bidding long before the price reached nosebleed territory.
This is a common game played well by those that make a living out of selling companies, because the bidding process isn't transparent and prospective buyers easily can be fooled into thinking something is happening that isn't. Based on coverage, I think Google is likely the company Facebook thought it was bidding against, but I'll bet Google exited the bidding process well below $5B because even Google isn't that crazy.

Wake-Up Call

I imagine this is a huge wake-up call for Microsoft, Aol, and Yahoo, which have large languishing IM platforms. If they were to cooperate with each other and market these offerings, they could be worth far more than they are, based on what Facebook paid for WhatsApp.
If one were to acquire the other two and position the combined customer base against the same opportunity, it likely could sell the result to Google or Microsoft for a fraction of what Facebook paid for WhatsApp -- and it actually might have something more valuable.
The older platforms play to an older demographic that isn't as flighty as the one WhatsApp targets. There is gold in this opportunity, and if it turns out that Google was massively outbid in a WhatsApp war, I expect it will attempt to correct its miss with an in-your-face acquisition that will make Zuckerberg look stupid.
In any case, I expect the drama here to continue for a bit longer.

Wrapping Up: Bringing Back Memories

Watching Facebook make this mistake reminds me of a motorcycle purchase I made over a decade ago. I ended up paying about a grand too much, because I was led to believe the bike was newer than it actually was. My wife has never let me forget that.
Facebook is my buddy this week, for as stupid as that motorcycle decision was, its near $20 billion purchase of a communications product makes my goof look practically brilliant. Thanks Facebook, for setting a new bar for foolish.

Product of the Week: Dell P2314T Touch Monitor

Product of the Week
Windows 8 is so much better with touch, but if you live much of the time on a desktop computer, touch monitors historically have been really hard to find, as well as poorly functioning and wicked expensive.
Dell sent over its P2314T monitor to use with its Android based Cloud Connect client, and I started using it with one of my Windows 8.1 machines. Getting touch back is pretty marvelous.

Dell 27 Touch Monitor P2714T
Dell 27 Touch Monitor - P2714T

The monitor has decent specs, with 1920x1080 resolution, a strong viewing angle, and high color brightness. As a touch monitor, it supports all 10 fingers, which is critical if you want to use the full set of Windows 8.1 touch features.
One of the important aspects of this monitor is a stand that can lie nearly flat so you can better work with the product collaboratively. At 17W, it doesn't pull much power, so if you are into green or just lower energy bills it helps with that.
Currently Dell is running it with a $100 discount so it is under $350 (just) -- a pretty nice value.
Windows 8 is so much better with a touch monitor -- and up till now, moving from a touch laptop to a non-touch desktop has been painful for me. Getting rid of that pain makes the Dell P2314T my product of the week. (Though if I were to buy one, I'd get the $700 Dell P2714Tbecause it is 27-inches, not 23-inches, and size does make a difference).

Samsung's New Galaxy S5 Might Ship Bathtub-Ready

Samsung's New Galaxy S5 Might Ship Bathtub-Ready
Of all the Samsung Galaxy S5 rumors to hit this week, the one that had me sit up straight and pay close attention is the rumor that the new Galaxy S5 may be both waterproof and dustproof.
This is a big deal, because it would be the first major flagship smartphone with wide and popular distribution to be waterproof.
Of course, Samsung last year offered the Galaxy S4 Active, which was a variant of its regular Galaxy S4. The Active version had a slightly bigger case and was IP67 certified: It could withstand a 30-minute submersion down to about 3 feet of water.
Unfortunately, you could still void the warranty if the unit actually failed and water seeped inside, killing your Galaxy S4 Active and leaving you high and dry with no recourse other than shelling out for a new phone.
In fact, there were some reports of Galaxy S4 Active units failing under normal, expected underwater use, which surely didn't help launch sales to true outdoor enthusiasts.
Still, the Galaxy S4 Active was a fine start, and while Sony's Xperia ZR and Z1S are also "waterproof," they aren't nearly as influential as the Samsung Galaxy line.

Bring It to the Bathtub, Baby!

While having a truly waterproof smartphone that you actually could snorkel with -- shooting photos and video of turtles and fish -- would be particularly fantastic, I'm not holding my breath.
For most people, simply being able to use their smartphone in the rain or snow would be a great leap forward. I once dropped an iPhone in a kitchen sink filled with soapy water. Although I snatched it out in time to save its life, my blood pressure skyrocketed while I frantically performed the smartphone equivalent of CPR.
Similarly, drinks get spilled on tables -- and at bars -- and who wants to be the clumsy guy who destroys a US$600 smartphone that belongs to the girl you just met?
Have you ever tried reading an e-book in the bathtub? Old-school paper is a lot less risky. Even so, all those nooks and crannies in smartphones and their cases could use a good dunking every now and then just to wash off the germs.
At the very least, it would be nice for active people who exercise with their smartphones -- just putting a smartphone in a front pants pocket and then hiking can introduce enough moisture from vaporous sweat to void your warranty.
A mostly waterproof smartphone is about peace of mind.

The Rumor and Ramifications

The waterproof rumor comes courtesy of reports from two tech news sites in Samsung's home country: ZDNet Korea and ET News.
Because this rumor comes just days before Samsung's big "Unpacked" product announcement -- set for Monday at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- I'm inclined to give it a high chance of being true.
As for effects on the industry, this possible feature carries more weight than a snappier processor, better camera, or even a Samsung fingerprint sensor. Why? Everyone wants their smartphone to be essentially waterproof.
Not only would it add pressure to other Android competitors, it could become an interesting advancement over Apple. After all, if Apple is so obsessed with amazing industrial design, why can't it create a waterproof iPhone, too?
Shouldn't be that hard, really, especially since there are already companies offering innovative ways of coating electronics with tiny molecular waterproof coatings

Apple Gets Litigious in China

Apple Gets Litigious in China

Apple Gets Litigious in China
Today in international tech news: Apple is suing a government agency and a domestic company in China over Siri patent headaches. Also: Space images paint a dark picture of North Korea; Rolls-Royce is working on what amount to sea freighter drones; and a monkey in Bali nabs a guy's camera -- and keeps it rolling.
Apple is suing China's State Intellectual Property Office and domestic company Zhizhen Network Technology over patent issues related to Siri, Apple's voice recognition software.
The State Intellectual Property Office is responsible for patents rights protection in China, while Zhizhen developed software similar to Siri.
Zhizhen patented its own voice recognition software, "Xiao i Robot," in 2004. Thus did Zhizhen sue Apple last year, claiming that Siri ripped off its software. Zhizhen demanded that Apple stop making Siri-based products, but no ruling was ever announced.
For its part, Apple had asked the State Intellectual Property Office to deem Zhizhen's voice recognition patent invalid. That the request was declined appears to have prompted these dual suits.
Apple anticipates that China will one day become its biggest market, so the company is unlikely to pick its legal battles willy-nilly. That said, it seems exceedingly unlikely that a Beijing-based court would rule against a Chinese government office and Chinese company in favor of an American company -- Apple, no less, which not long ago was issuing open apologies to all of China.
Perhaps Apple is gunning for a settlement or compromise of some sort, as opposed to an out-and-out legal victory. In the summer of 2012, Apple plopped down US$60 million to settle a dispute involving naming rights to "iPad."

Space Images Show Dark North Korea

NASA released images from the International Space Station that show just how dark North Korea is at night, especially compared to its southern neighbor.
City lights at night illustrate dramatically the relative economic importance of cities, NASA said.
The images of the Korean Peninsula illustrate that Seoul is a major city, while North Korea is almost completely dark, and that the North Korean capital of Pyongyang -- which in 2008 had a population of more than 3 million -- was similar to small towns in South Korea.

Rolls-Royce Creating Maritime Drones

Rolls-Royce is working on crewless ships -- drone freighters, basically -- in an attempt to make shipping safer, cheaper and cleaner.
Rolls-Royce's "Blue Ocean" team is running a virtual reality prototype in a Norway office that mimics the 360-degree view that an onboard crew would see from a ship's bridge.
It is conceivable that the ships will be deployed in regions such as the Baltic Sea within a decade. However, unmanned ships at present are illegal, so there will need to be both a regulatory and technological revolution before drone freighters are floating around.
A crew on a freighter costs more than $3,300 per day and accounts for 44 percent of total operating expenses.

Monkey in Bali Nabs Cameras, Records Self

A monkey in Bali snagged a camera belonging to a man who was trying to film it and its monkey compadres.
The camera owner apparently was trying to lure the monkeys into favorable positions to film them, but this particular fellow -- or gal, it's tough to tell -- swooped in and nabbed the GoPro camera.

The monkey then proceeded to toy around with it, test the camera's edibility, and then point it at his/her face for some close-ups.

Protecting children from harmful material and people on the Internet

Protecting children from harmful material and people on the Internet

Child on the InternetSome web pages and content on the Internet are not suitable for all audiences. Below is a listing of different steps you can do to help ensure your child is protected from harmful material or web pages you believe are not suitable for your children.

Talk

Talk to your children about the dangers of the Internet and what they should not do while on the Internet. Below is a basic listing of what you may consider discussing with your child.
  • Personal Information - Never give personal information about yourself in chat rooms, web pages, or online forms. This includes age, area code, e-mail address, home address, home city, Internet Service Provider name, Instant Messenger name or address, other location related information, passwords, personal web page, phone (mobile phone) numbers, pictures of yourself (selfies), school name, school grade, school web page, weight, webcam address, workplace, or zip code.
  • Never meet someone - Never agree to meet an individual from the Internet without the parents or guardian at the agreed meeting location.
  • Internet Purchases - Never enter an area that costs money, requires a credit card, requires personal information, asks for passwords, or requires you hang up and dial another number with your computer without explicit permission from the parents or a parent present.
  • Downloads - Never accept a file or download from another user.
  • Web page - Do not visit web pages that are sent to you in e-mail, chat, or instant messengers without a parent or guardian present.
  • Gifts - Never accept any gift from users you meet online.
  • Friends - Don't give out your friends information as it could be tied to you.
  • Personal pictures - Never send someone a personal picture online or on a cell phone.
  • Talking about sex or provocative images - When online don't talk about sex, post provocative images, or tease other people online.
  • Talk to you - If your child ever witnesses something that upsets them or makes them feel uncomfortable, make sure they know it's ok to talk with you.

Monitor use

Monitor or browse the Internet with your kids and try to keep the computer in an open area. Don't allow your child to have their own computer in their own room. If you need to monitor your children's use while you're away consider a third-party filter programs that help protect your computer from inappropriate sites. See the Internet filters section for a listing of these programs.
If you're using a new version of Windows we highly recommend trying the Family Safety program included with Windows. Oldver versions of Windows running Microsoft Internet Explorer can also protect their family from harmful material by enabling Internet Explorer Content Advisor.

View Internet History

Make sure your child is not viewing any web pages they should not be viewing by looking at the Internet browser's history or make sure they are not deleting the history in order to hide what they are viewing.
Look at the browser address bar or location bar for additional information about what was typed in the browser address bar.

View IM buddies

If your computer has an Instant Messenger program such as MSN, make sure that their friend list or buddy list doesn't have anyone you do not know of.

Social networking sites

Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are a very popular destination for teens and younger users on the Internet because of the ability to communicate with friends and make new friends over the Internet. Unfortunately these locations are also frequently visited by online predators because of online pictures and personal information posted by many of users participating on them. If you allow your children to use these sites make sure they are not posting personal information about themselves as mentioned earlier in this document. We also strongly encourage that parents or the child who setup the account set their profile to private so only their friends and family can view the profile.
Become their friend
It's also a good idea that if your child is on a social networking site that you do the same and become their friend. Doing this is a great way to see what your child is doing and posting.
  • Questions and answers regarding MySpace.

Know the lingo

The Internet especially with younger users is full of acronyms, lingo, codes, and other terms that can be used to disguise what is being talked about. See the top 10 terms every parent should know for commonly used terms and codes and links to further information.

Disable webcams

If your computer has any digital camera or webcam connected to it prohibit your child from using it without your presence or disconnect or disable it when you're not using it.

Watch school websites

Watch your child's school web page for any personal information about your kids such as pictures of a student, full name, address, etc. This information can be found using search engines if a predator knows your child's full name, school, or grade.

Protect them in games

Many children and adults play online games. Just like the Internet children should know not to give out any personal information to other players or participate in any trading of in-game items for in-game services or real life personal information.

Madman base jumps into a foggy void with zero visibility

Watch this crazy guy base jumping into a void full of thick fog. I can imagine him thinking: "hmmm, how can I make this base jump thing even riskier? Of course, let's do it in a foggy day so I don't even know where the hell I am going!" This is just madness—but pretty exciting, I have to admit. As I saw him entering the fog I could hear myself saying "oh no no no no NO!"
